EPES Transport Sustainability Program

EPES is a leader in sustainability in the trucking industry. Unlike a lot of carriers in our industry several years ago we made the decision to fully embraced new tractor and trailer technologies as opposed to a taking the route that a lot of peer carriers have taken which was to avoid the technology as cost reduction strategy.

We live by a strict equipment upgrade schedule that keeps us ahead of several of our peers in the industry with new energy conservation technologies. The average age of our tractors is 2.5 years old.

Engine Sustainability Technology

EPES has fully embraced the EPA engine regulations and we have converted all but 5 of our 1200 tractors to either EPA 2014 or Green House 2017 engines. The new engines are as emission free as possible with today's technology. The sustainability opportunity now is on improving the tractors miles per gallon (mpg) usage.

Governed Engines

The entire EPES fleet is governed at 63 mile per hour. When you consider that EPES traveled over 120 million miles in 2016 governing our engines at 63 versus ungoverned engines reduced fuel gallons used by over 1 million gallons.

Down Sped Engines

We were early adopters of Down Sped technology. Engine automatically reduces RPMs at cruise speeds which improves mpg and reduces fuel usage.

  • Eliminate Idling
  • All sleeper tractors are equipped with bunk heaters.
  • Idling tractor uses 2.5 gallons of fuel per hour. 25 gallons in a 10 hour layover
  • Bunk heater uses .6 gallons in a 10 hour layover.

Facility Sustainability

  • We recycle and/or recapture all items that can be reused or repurposed.
  • We heat shops with waste oil from our tractors
  • All cardboard, plastic, metals, etc. are recycled
  • We are putting LED lights in our facilities

Results from above changes: Since 2010 we have improved our mpg by at least .6 mpg average. Based on 1,200 tractors averaging 100,000 miles per year we used 1,818,182 less fuel gallons 2016 vs. apples to apples comparison based on 2010 mpg.

What Sustainability means to EPES

In 2006 with the coming of new EPA regulated engines coming out in 2007 we decided how best to initiate our program starting by acknowledging the fact our industry is a major contributor of carbon emissions and we use a large amount of fossil fuel. There was a certainly a concern for the cost of the new technologies whether it was with engines, trailer tails or a new software packaged that measured our tractor and driver performance.

The decision was made to fully embrace the new technology and to not play the game of delaying new technology in hopes of saving money.

What does it mean to our company? It means that we are doing all we can to reduce our carbon footprint and our fuel usage. The other benefit is that we have separated ourselves from a lot of our competition peers which has allowed us to qualify to do business with customers where other carriers do not qualify.

Our Initiative

EPES is a NC Smartway Certified Carrier
Our first steps in to the sustainability was in 2007 with the purchase of tractors with emission controls on them. Since then we have continued to upgrade our tractors, added wind resistance reducing skirts to our trailers and fully embraced recycling of all our waste.

Our efforts to reduce emissions have been recognized by state of North Carolina and we were awarded the NC Smart Fleet Champion Award.

We are recognized by the Department of Transportation for our focus on being sustainable and environmentally friendly with Smartway Certification at the highest level with allows us to display the certification on all of our tractor.
