### How Strategic Truckload Planning Maximizes Uptime

**Published:** June 9, 2026 | **Author:** Zach Ligenza | **Section:** News and Stories
**URL:** https://www.epestransport.com/about/news-and-stories/truckload-planning-maximizes-uptime/.md

Uptime is no longer just a fleet maintenance issue. It has become a full operational strategy. For shippers and carriers alike, maximizing productive miles while minimizing dwell time, empty moves and service disruptions is now a competitive necessity. Strategic truckload planning sits at the intersection of network design, freight mix decisions and real-time execution. As shippers ask more detailed questions such as how many pallets fit in a truckload or when it makes sense to choose full truckload versus less-than-truckload service, carriers must be prepared with operational discipline and clear answers.

At Epes, strategic truckload planning is how uptime is protected every day. With a fleet of more than 1,150 tractors, a strong presence across the Eastern half of the United States and a network of regional terminals designed for density and consistency, Epes delivers reliable regional and long-haul truckload solutions built for today’s operating realities.

The New Definition of Uptime

Uptime goes beyond keeping trucks mechanically available. It means trucks moving with purpose instead of sitting at docks or waiting for the next assignment. It means drivers operating predictable and efficient lanes. It means operations teams making proactive decisions rather than reacting to disruptions.

It also means helping customers determine the right freight strategy for shipment size and freight characteristics. Understanding what is less-than-truckload service versus full truckload becomes critical when shipments do not fully utilize trailer capacity. Choosing the wrong option can result in additional handling, longer transit times and unnecessary productivity loss.

Strategic truckload planning ensures that freight volume, lane structure and trailer utilization are aligned so assets and drivers remain productive and service expectations are consistently met.

Truckload Versus Less-Than-Truckload and Why It Matters for Uptime

One of the most common questions shippers ask is what does less than truckload mean in practical terms. Less-than-truckload, or LTL, refers to shipments that do not require a full trailer and are consolidated with freight from other shippers. While LTL can be effective in certain scenarios, it introduces more handling, transfers and scheduling complexity.

From an uptime standpoint, full truckload freight provides greater predictability. When shippers understand how many pallets fit in a truckload and whether their shipment volume supports dedicated equipment, they can reduce dwell time, improve consistency and strengthen overall service reliability.

Strategic truckload planning evaluates these choices at the network level to ensure freight strategy supports uptime rather than undermining it.

LTL vs. Full Truckload (FTL)

Choosing between Less‑Than‑Truckload (LTL) and Full Truckload (FTL) depends on shipment size, urgency and cost efficiency.

Factor

1–10 pallets

10+ pallets or full trailer

Small, infrequent shipments

High volume or time sensitive freight

Commodity-Specific Planning for Heavy Freight

Uptime is also influenced by the type of freight being moved. Heavy and dense commodities require precise planning to maintain compliance and efficiency. Common examples of dense freight include metals, aggregates, paper rolls, industrial equipment and liquids in bulk containers. Shippers frequently ask questions about how much material can fit in a truckload because weight, packaging and loading methods directly impact routing, scheduling and equipment selection.

When these factors are not planned correctly, trucks may experience loading delays, weight adjustments or rework at the dock. Each of these issues disrupts flow across the network. Strategic truckload planning anticipates these challenges by aligning trailer configuration, appointment schedules and lane design with the freight’s specific characteristics.

At Epes, planners account for these variables upfront to help keep trucks moving while maintaining safety and regulatory standards.

When should you switch from LTL to Full Truckload?

Use this checklist to determine the tipping point:

You’re shipping 10–12 pallets or more

Total freight weight exceeds 10,000–15,000 lbs.

You need faster, more reliable transit

Damage claims or accessories are increasing

The general rule to follow is when your LTL shipment fills ⅓ to ½ of a trailer, FTL is often more economical.

Reducing Dwell Time Through Operational Discipline

Dwell time remains one of the biggest threats to fleet uptime. Extended loading and unloading windows create ripple effects that impact drivers, planners and customers.

At Epes, reducing dwell time is a shared responsibility across operations, planning and customer alignment. Practices that support faster turns include appointment scheduling that reflects customer shipping patterns, lane consistency that allows planners to anticipate congestion or facility delays and clear service expectations that support efficient execution.

Because Epes operates both regional and long-haul truckload freight, planners can blend shorter and longer moves to maintain momentum when disruptions occur. This flexibility helps keep equipment productive even when conditions tighten in specific markets.

Real-Time Communication With Assigned Planners

Static planning alone is no longer sufficient. Strategic truckload execution depends on real-time visibility and consistent communication, especially between drivers and the planners responsible for managing their freight.

Epes has drivers that work with assigned planners who understand their lanes, hours-of-service profiles and operating preferences. That familiarity enables faster decision-making when conditions change and reduces unnecessary empty time between loads.

This close connection supports stronger uptime outcomes and improves the driver experience, which remains essential to long-term fleet stability.

The Value of Regional Terminal Density

Epes Transport’s regional terminal density across the Eastern United States is a critical advantage in today’s service-focused environment. Terminals improve uptime by reducing out-of-route miles for maintenance, speeding issue resolution and providing local knowledge that supports better planning decisions.

This density also creates flexibility. When freight volumes shift or lanes change, Epes can reposition equipment without sacrificing coverage or consistency. The network is designed to keep trucks positioned where they can remain productive.

Strategic Truckload Planning as a Competitive Advantage

Shippers are evaluating carriers on more than price alone. Reliability, responsiveness and operational stability are now central to transportation decisions. Strategic truckload planning has become a competitive differentiator.

By helping customers navigate decisions between full truckload and less-than-truckload service, optimizing trailer utilization and accounting for freight attributes such as weight and density, Epes maximizes uptime while protecting service quality.

Moving Forward With Confidence

In an industry defined by constant change, strategic truckload planning provides clarity. For Epes, it ensures trucks stay productive, drivers stay supported and customers receive consistent service they can rely on.

As supply chains continue to evolve, Epes remains focused on what matters most. Keeping freight and the businesses that depend on it moving forward with confidence.

### Building Sustainable Health Habits For Professional Drivers

**Published:** April 24, 2026 | **Author:** Zach Ligenza | **Section:** News and Stories
**URL:** https://www.epestransport.com/about/news-and-stories/building-sustainable-health-habits-for-professional-drivers/.md

At Epes, we recognize that professional drivers face a unique paradox: your job demands peak physical and mental performance, yet long-haul trucking creates some of the toughest conditions for maintaining health. Irregular schedules, limited food options, prolonged sitting, and constant delivery pressure create obstacles office workers never encounter. You take tremendous pride in your professionalism—navigating severe weather, managing challenging traffic, solving mechanical issues, adapting to route changes, and meeting demanding schedules while staying compliant with hours-of-service regulations. However, amid these daily challenges, personal health often becomes an unintended casualty.

The reality: Maintaining healthy eating habits and regular physical activity isn't a luxury—it's fundamental to performing your job safely and effectively. Your body is the engine that powers every successful delivery. Just as you wouldn't run your truck on contaminated fuel or skip preventive maintenance, you can't expect peak performance without proper nutrition and movement.

Let's explore practical, realistic strategies for building sustainable health habits within the constraints of professional driving.

Understanding the Health Impact of Professional Driving

Before diving into solutions, it's important to acknowledge the legitimate health challenges inherent to trucking:

Occupational health risks:

Sedentary lifestyle: Sitting 10-14 hours daily increases risks for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, deep vein thrombosis, and obesity

Irregular sleep patterns: Rotating schedules and night driving disrupt circadian rhythms, affecting metabolism and immune function

Limited food access: Truck stops and highway options favor processed, high-calorie, low-nutrient foods

Stress factors: Traffic, weather, tight schedules, and time away from family create chronic stress

Physical demands: Loading, securing cargo, and tarping require strength but occur irregularly

The compounding effect: These factors reinforce each other, creating a cycle where poor nutrition leads to fatigue, which reduces motivation for exercise, which worsens sleep quality, which increases stress, which drives poor food choices.

Breaking this cycle requires a realistic, sustainable approach—not perfection, but consistent improvement.

Mastering Portion Control: The Foundation of Healthy Eating

You don't need to overhaul your diet or eliminate foods you enjoy. The most effective nutritional change for most drivers is simply controlling portion sizes. Americans have become accustomed to portions 2-3 times larger than appropriate serving sizes, and restaurant portions often feed multiple people.

Visual Portion Guide

Learning to estimate serving sizes without measuring helps you make better choices anywhere:

Protein (meat, fish, poultry):

One serving equals a deck of cards or palm of your hand (3-4 ounces)

Restaurant steaks are often 8-12 ounces (2-3 servings)

Carbohydrates (rice, pasta, potatoes):

One serving = your clenched fist (½ to ¾ cup)

Restaurant pasta dishes typically contain 3-4 servings

Vegetables:

One serving = your fist (1 cup raw, ½ cup cooked)

Eat as many non-starchy vegetables as you want—they're nutritionally dense and low-calorie

Fats (butter, oil, salad dressing):

One serving = your thumb tip (1 tablespoon)

Restaurant salads often contain 4-6 servings of dressing

Cheese:

One serving = your pointer finger or four stacked dice (1 ounce)

Snacks (chips, nuts, crackers):

One serving = one cupped handful

A standard bag contains 2-4 servings

Practical Portion Control Strategies for Drivers

At restaurants:

Request a to-go box immediately and pack half your meal before you start eating

Restaurant entrees routinely contain 1,200-1,800 calories—enough for two meals

You'll have tomorrow's lunch ready and save money

Order from appetizer or lunch menus rather than dinner entrees

Smaller portions at lower prices

Still satisfying and flavorful

Share meals with other drivers when eating in groups

Split an entree and order extra sides or a salad

Order kids' meals without embarrassment

Kids' portions better represent normal serving sizes

If ordering in person feels awkward, use mobile ordering or drive-through

You'll save money and calories

Request modifications confidently

Ask for vegetables instead of fries

Request dressing or sauce on the side

Substitute grilled for fried preparations

In your truck:

Pre-portion bulk snacks into individual bags

When you buy large bags, immediately divide them into single-serving portions

Label each bag with the calorie content

Reaching for a second or third bag becomes a conscious decision rather than mindless eating

Use smaller containers and dishes

If you eat in your truck, use 8-9 inch plates instead of standard 12-inch plates

Studies show people fill their plates regardless of size—smaller plates automatically reduce portions

Apply the "out of sight, out of mind" principle

Store junk food in hard-to-reach compartments

Keep fruit, nuts, protein bars, and water at eye level and within easy reach

Practice the one-serving rule

Never eat directly from the original package

Always portion out one serving into a bowl or plate

Put the package away before eating

Beverage management:

Recognize liquid calories

A 20-ounce regular soda contains 240 calories and 65 grams of sugar

Sweet tea, energy drinks, and specialty coffee drinks contain similar amounts

These provide no satiety—you'll still be hungry after consuming them

Make simple substitutions

Water instead of soda saves 200+ calories per meal (600+ daily if you drink 3 sodas)

Unsweetened iced tea or coffee instead of sweetened versions

Eat whole fruit instead of drinking juice—you get fiber and more nutrients

Flavor water creatively

Add lemon, lime, or cucumber slices

Try sugar-free flavor enhancers sparingly

Keep water cold in a quality insulated container

Strategic Indulgence

Here's a critical truth: Restrictive diets that eliminate all enjoyable foods inevitably fail. People maintain unsustainable restrictions for weeks or months, then cave in and overindulge, often gaining back more weight than they lost.

The sustainable approach:

Build treats into your plan

Designate one or two meals per week as "free meals" where you enjoy favorites without guilt

This prevents feelings of deprivation that lead to binge eating

Practice moderation, not elimination

Love ice cream? Have ½ cup instead of 2 cups (save 300-400 calories)

Want cookies? Enjoy one or two quality cookies instead of half a package

Savor special foods mindfully

Eat slowly and pay attention to flavors and textures

Smaller portions can be just as satisfying when you're fully present

Mindless eating while driving or watching TV leads to overconsumption without enjoyment

Building Sustainable Exercise Habits on the Road

Exercise for truck drivers doesn't require gym memberships, extensive time commitments, or specialized equipment. Small amounts of consistent physical activity provide enormous health benefits, particularly for counteracting the sedentary nature of driving.

Realistic Exercise Goals

Start with this mindset shift: Any movement is better than no movement. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Ten minutes of walking is infinitely better than zero minutes of exercise while waiting for the "perfect" 60-minute workout that never happens.

Recommended targets:

Minimum: 20-30 minutes of moderate activity daily

Ideal: 45-60 minutes of mixed activity (cardio and strength) 4-5 days per week

Ultimate goal: Move every 2-3 hours throughout your day

Practical Exercise Strategies for Drivers

Walking—the most accessible exercise:

Integrate walking into your routine

Park at the far end of truck stop lots and walk to the building

Walk the perimeter of rest areas during breaks (most have marked walking paths)

Take a 10-15 minute walk after meals to aid digestion and reduce post-meal drowsiness

Use your required breaks strategically

DOT regulations require 30-minute breaks—use 20 minutes for walking

Walk while making phone calls to family or dispatch

Set a timer to remind yourself to move every 2 hours

Track your progress

Use a fitness tracker or smartphone app to monitor daily steps

Aim for 7,000-10,000 steps daily

Many drivers find that setting step goals creates motivation

Truck-friendly strength exercises (no equipment needed):

These can be performed in rest area parking lots, alongside your truck, or in sleeper berths:

Push-ups (chest, shoulders, triceps)

Standard, wall, or incline variations depending on fitness level

Start with 2-3 sets of as many as you can complete with good form

Squats (legs, glutes, core)

Use proper form: feet shoulder-width apart, weight in heels, knees tracking over toes

Target 2-3 sets of 15-20 repetitions

Planks (core strength)

Hold a plank position on forearms and toes for 20-60 seconds

Repeat 3-4 times

Strong core muscles reduce back pain and improve vehicle control

Lunges (legs, balance)

Step forward into a lunge position, lowering back knee toward ground

Alternate legs for 2-3 sets of 10 per leg

Step-ups (legs, cardiovascular)

Use truck steps, trailer steps, or curbs

Step up and down continuously for 2-3 minutes

Excellent cardio workout in minimal space

Stretching and flexibility:

Prolonged sitting creates muscle tightness and reduces flexibility, contributing to back pain and movement restrictions. Daily stretching prevents these issues:

Hamstring stretches (back of thighs)

Reduces lower back strain

Hold stretches 30-45 seconds without bouncing

Hip flexor stretches (front of hips)

Counteracts sitting-related tightness

Perform kneeling hip flexor stretches during breaks

Shoulder and neck stretches

Relieves tension from steering and sitting

Roll shoulders, stretch arms across body, tilt head side to side

Lower back stretches

Knee-to-chest stretches, spinal twists

Critical for preventing and managing back pain

Utilizing truck stop fitness facilities:

Many major truck stops now feature fitness areas with basic equipment:

Pilot Flying J and Love's Travel Stops increasingly offer fitness rooms

Equipment typically includes treadmills, stationary bikes, and free weights

Take advantage of these facilities during longer breaks or when shutting down for the night

Mini-workouts throughout the day:

Rather than finding 60 consecutive minutes, accumulate exercise in short bursts:

Morning: 10 minutes of stretching and bodyweight exercises before driving

Mid-morning break: 10-minute brisk walk

Lunch: 15-minute walk after eating

Afternoon break: 10 minutes of strength exercises (push-ups, squats, planks)

Evening: 15-minute walk before or after dinner

Total: 60 minutes spread across the day with no single session exceeding 15 minutes

Staying Motivated

Common exercise barriers for drivers and solutions:

Barrier: "I'm too tired after driving all day"

Solution: Exercise actually increases energy levels by improving circulation and oxygen delivery. Start with just 5-10 minutes—you'll likely feel energized enough to continue

Barrier: "I don't have time"

Solution: You're already required to take breaks. Use 15-20 minutes of break time for movement instead of sitting

Barrier: "It's too hot/cold/rainy"

Solution: In extreme weather, walk inside truck stops, perform exercises in your sleeper berth, or do bodyweight circuits under overpasses or covered areas

Barrier: "I'm self-conscious exercising where others can see me"

Solution: Choose more private locations (far end of parking lots, behind your trailer). Remember: most people admire others making healthy choices

Barrier: "I don't know what exercises to do"

Solution: Start simple—walking requires no expertise. Add basic exercises gradually. YouTube offers countless "truck driver workout" videos

Building accountability:

Partner with another driver and check in with each other about daily activity

Join online communities: Facebook groups and forums for driver fitness provide support and motivation

Track progress in a notebook or app—seeing improvement motivates continued effort

Share goals with family: having others aware of your commitment increases accountability

Sleep: The Foundation of Health and Safety

No amount of healthy eating or exercise compensates for inadequate sleep. Sleep deprivation impairs judgment, slows reaction time, and increases crash risk as much as alcohol intoxication.

Sleep requirements:

Target: 7-9 hours of quality sleep per 24-hour period

Individual needs vary, but less than 6 hours creates measurable cognitive impairment

Improving Sleep Quality in Your Truck

Control light exposure

Use blackout curtains or window covers

Wear a sleep mask if complete darkness isn't achievable

Minimize screen time 30-60 minutes before sleep (blue light disrupts melatonin production)

Manage temperature

Slightly cool temperatures (65-68°F) promote better sleep

Use appropriate bedding for the season

Consider a small fan for air circulation

Reduce noise disruption

Use earplugs or white noise apps to mask truck stop sounds

Park away from idling trucks when possible

Consider noise-canceling headphones playing calming sounds

Establish consistent sleep routines

Go to bed and wake at similar times when possible

Develop a pre-sleep ritual (reading, stretching, relaxation techniques)

Avoid caffeine 6-8 hours before intended sleep time

Invest in quality bedding

A good mattress topper transforms uncomfortable sleeper berth mattresses

Quality pillows that support proper neck alignment

Clean, comfortable sheets and blankets

Managing Irregular Schedules

When sleep schedules shift due to loading/unloading times or appointment changes:

Prioritize getting your required hours even if timing is irregular

Take strategic naps (20-30 minutes) to supplement nighttime sleep

Use bright light exposure during your "day" (even if it's nighttime) to help reset your internal clock

Consider melatonin supplements (consult your doctor first) to help adjust sleep timing

Stress Management and Mental Health

The mental and emotional demands of professional driving are as challenging as the physical demands. Long periods of isolation, time away from family, financial pressures, and the stress of meeting tight schedules take significant tolls on mental health.

Recognizing Stress Symptoms

Irritability or short temper

Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much

Changes in appetite

Loss of interest in activities you usually enjoy

Difficulty concentrating

Persistent feelings of sadness or anxiety

Practical Stress Management Strategies

Maintain social connections

Schedule regular video calls with family (not just quick phone check-ins)

Connect with other drivers at truck stops—combat isolation through community

Stay in touch with friends through social media and messaging apps

Practice mindfulness and relaxation

Deep breathing exercises during breaks

Meditation apps like Headspace or Calm offer guided sessions as short as 3-5 minutes

Progressive muscle relaxation before sleep

Engage in hobbies and interests

Listen to audiobooks, podcasts, or music you enjoy

Take photos of interesting places you visit

Learn something new through online courses or educational content

Set boundaries

Learn to say no to unrealistic requests

Protect your off-duty time—don't let work encroach on rest periods

Communicate clearly with dispatch about your limits

Seek support when needed

Epes provides Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) offering confidential counseling

Don't hesitate to use mental health resources—seeking help is strength, not weakness

If you experience persistent depression, anxiety, or thoughts of self-harm, contact a mental health professional immediately

Medical Care and Preventive Health

Professional drivers often delay medical care due to scheduling challenges and fear of disqualification. However, managing health conditions actually protects your career—uncontrolled conditions are more likely to result in certification issues than properly treated ones.

Essential Preventive Care

Annual physical examinations

Don't wait for DOT physicals—see your primary care doctor annually

Monitor blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and weight trends

Address concerning changes early before they become disqualifying conditions

Manage chronic conditions consistently

If you have diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, or other conditions, follow treatment plans strictly

Take prescribed medications as directed

Keep thorough records of treatment and control—medical examiners need documentation

Vision and hearing testing

Eyes and ears are critical to safe driving

Get professional evaluations annually

Update prescriptions promptly when changes occur

Dental care

Dental infections create serious health risks and severe pain that impairs driving

Schedule cleanings and address problems promptly

Many areas offer dental clinics with extended hours for working professionals

Mental health support

Depression, anxiety, and stress-related conditions are treatable

Modern treatments (therapy, medication when appropriate) don't automatically disqualify drivers

Untreated mental health conditions are far more dangerous than managed ones

Creating Your Personal Health Plan

Sustainable change doesn't happen overnight. Attempting to overhaul every aspect of your health simultaneously leads to overwhelm and failure.

Building Sustainable Habits

Month 1: Focus on hydration and portion control

Drink adequate water daily

Implement portion control strategies at meals

Track what you eat (awareness precedes change)

Month 2: Add walking

Take 10-15 minute walks during breaks

Aim for 5,000-7,000 steps daily

Continue Month 1 habits

Month 3: Introduce strength exercises

Add 2-3 short strength sessions weekly

Continue walking and portion control

Increase daily steps to 7,000-10,000

Month 4: Optimize sleep

Implement sleep hygiene improvements

Establish consistent sleep routines

Maintain all previous habits

The result: After four months, you've built a comprehensive health routine without overwhelming yourself. These habits become automatic rather than forced disciplines.

### Stay Safe on the Road: Situational Awareness and Blind Spot Safety for Truck Drivers

**Published:** April 8, 2026 | **Author:** Zach Ligenza | **Section:** News and Stories
**URL:** https://www.epestransport.com/about/news-and-stories/stay-safe-on-the-road-situational-awareness-and-blind-spot-safety-for-truck-drivers/.md

Every mile you drive comes with risks – especially when changing lanes or merging. Did you know that two out of every 10 collisions happen because of improper lane changes? For truck drivers, the challenge is even greater because of blind spots (No-Zones). These areas can hide vehicles, creating dangerous situations if you’re not alert. The good news? Most of these accidents are preventable with strong situational awareness.

Why Is Situational Awareness Important?

Your truck’s size means you have limited visibility. Blind spots exist on all sides, but the most dangerous is the lane to your right – especially when a car is beside you or just ahead. A compact car is only about 14 feet long, and your blind spot can stretch 23 feet or more. That’s a recipe for disaster if you’re not scanning and planning.

How To Improve Situational Awareness

1. Adjust Before You Roll
Before starting your trip, clean and adjust all mirrors for maximum visibility. This minimizes blind spots and sets you up for success.

2. Scan Constantly
Check your mirrors often. Situational awareness means knowing what’s around you at all times.

3. Communicate Clearly
Use your turn signals early. Remember – signals are a request, not a demand. Give other drivers time to react.

4. Manage Your Space
Ensure you have enough room to complete a maneuver safely. Never rush a lane change.

5. Track Disappearing Vehicles
If a car you saw suddenly vanishes, it’s probably in your blind spot. Don’t assume – verify before moving.

6. Anticipate and Yield
Expect the unexpected. Other drivers may react unpredictably to your signals. Defensive driving means giving the right of way when necessary.

7. Stay Professional
Road rage? Ignore it. Your job is safety, not retaliation. Slow down, re-establish space and keep calm.

As a reminder, situational awareness isn’t just a buzzword – it’s your best defense against preventable collisions. Make safety your destination every time you hit the road.

### Terms and Conditions of Use

**Published:** December 9, 2025 | **Author:** Magdalene Hoffman | **Section:** General
**URL:** https://www.epestransport.com/terms-and-conditions/.md

Terms and Conditions of Use of the EPES Transport System, LLC (“EPES”) Internet Web Sites and Other Web Services

1. Legal Notices

Please read these Terms and Conditions of Use (“Terms of Use”) carefully, as they may affect your rights, including your right to a jury trial.

These Terms of Use govern each website, application, and online service provided by EPES that link to these Terms of Use (collectively, the “Sites”). By accessing or using any of the Sites, you acknowledge your careful review and acceptance of these Terms of Use. If you do not agree to the Terms of Use, you may not register or maintain an account or otherwise use or access any of the Sites or their contents.

THIS AGREEMENT CONTAINS A MANDATORY DISPUTE RESOLUTION PROVISION AND ARBITRATION AGREEMENT WITH A CLASS ACTION WAIVER THAT AFFECTS YOUR RIGHTS, INCLUDING THE RIGHT TO A JURY TRIAL. IN ARBITRATION, THERE IS NO JUDGE OR JURY AND THERE IS LESS DISCOVERY AND APPELLATE REVIEW THAN IN COURT. PLEASE REVIEW THOSE SECTIONS OF THESE TERMS CAREFULLY.

2. Acceptance of Terms of Use

These Terms of Use constitute an express agreement between EPES and you. BY ACCESSING, VISITING, OR USING THE SITES, YOU ACKNOWLEDGE AND AGREE THAT YOU HAVE CAREFULLY READ ALL OF THESE TERMS OF USE, THAT YOU UNDERSTAND EACH OF THEM AND THAT YOU AGREE TO BE BOUND BY ALL OF THEM. EPES may at any time and from time to time revise these Terms of Use by updating this posting. You should visit this page, which is always accessible from the footer on the Sites’ homepage or initial screen, from time to time to review these Terms and Conditions to learn of and understand any changes, because they are binding on you. Your use of the Sites following any such revisions constitutes your agreement to follow and be bound by the terms as revised.

3. Use of the Sites

The purpose of the Sites is to provide you with information and to provide and enhance services that EPES offers. You agree your access to any of the Sites and their contents, shall be solely used for obtaining information and/or services and that you shall not use your account or otherwise access any of the Sites or their contents to directly compete with or gain competitive advantage over EPES. You shall not disrupt or otherwise interfere with the normal operation of the Sites, including without limitation posting or transmitting files that contain viruses, worms, Trojan horses, or any other contaminating or destructive features, or material that is harmful, offensive, threatening, abusive or hateful. You shall not access or use the Sites in any manner that violates state or federal law.

You shall not use any robot, spider, scripting program, "page-scrape" or other automatic or manual device, program, algorithm or methodology to access, monitor, upload, download, "scrape," or otherwise copy any portion of the Sites or their contents without the express prior written consent of EPES. You shall not reproduce or circumvent the navigational structure or presentation of the Sites to obtain or attempt to obtain any content of any portion of the Sites.

You agree that violation of these Terms of Use constitutes an unlawful and unfair business practice causing irreparable harm to EPES for which monetary damages would be inadequate, thus subjecting you to injunctive or equitable relief in addition to any other remedies available at law.

EPES cannot and does not represent or warrant that the files available for downloading through the Sites will be free of infection, viruses, worms, Trojan horses or other code that manifest contaminating or destructive ties. You assume all risk and responsibility for your use of the Sites and the Internet.

4. Proprietary Information

As between you and EPES, all content of the Sites, including each Site's appearance, "look and feel," report formats and information or system hardware used or supplied by EPES in connection with the use of such Site, are owned by EPES unless otherwise expressly indicated. You may not copy, distribute, transmit, display, modify, perform, or create derivative works from information or material on the Sites, except as expressly permitted in these Terms of Use. You may, however, download and make one copy of the content and other downloadable items displayed on the Sites for your personal, noncompetitive use only, provided that you maintain all copyright and other notices contained in such content.

Any EPES trademarks, trade dress, service marks, logos or trade names that appear on the Sites or are otherwise referenced on the Sites are the property of EPES and no license or other right to use such marks, names, logos or dress shall be deemed given without the express written permission of EPES.

5. Confidentiality

With the exception of materials obtained from or available in the public domain, you shall treat as confidential the content provided on the Sites. You also shall treat as confidential information or systems hardware used or supplied by EPES in connection with the Sites. You shall not disclose such content, information or systems hardware to any third party without EPES’ prior written consent. You will not use such content, information or systems hardware for purposes other than as expressly permitted in these Terms of Use.

Please note that if you have entered into a separate confidentiality agreement with EPES, the content, information or systems hardware of the Sites shall be included within the definition for "confidential information" for purposes of and pursuant to the term of any such agreement(s).

6. User-Supplied Content

You agree that you are solely responsible for the accuracy and content of all information, data, text, or other materials that you provide to EPES via the Sites and that EPES is not responsible or liable for this information. You understand that your participation in online communications may occur in real time and is not edited, censored or otherwise controlled by EPES. EPES cannot and does not screen content provided by users of the Sites. EPES reserves the right to monitor such content and has the right, in its sole discretion, to remove such content if EPES determines it to be harmful, offensive or otherwise in violation of these Terms of Use or Privacy Notice. By providing such content, you grant to EPES an unrestricted, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, fully-paid license to use, reproduce, display, perform, transmit, distribute, modify or create derivative works from such content.

You agree that you will not submit material that is copyrighted, protected by trade secret or otherwise subject to third party proprietary rights, including privacy and publicity rights, unless you are the owner of such rights or have permission from their rightful owner to post the material and to grant EPES all of the license rights granted herein.

7. Digital Millennium Copyright Act

Notice. If you are a copyright owner or an agent thereof and believe that any submission of material made by a user of the Sites or other content infringes upon your copyrights, you may submit a notification pursuant to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA") by providing our Copyright Agent with the following information in writing pursuant to 17 U.S.C 512(c)(3):

A physical or electronic signature of a person authorized to act on behalf of the owner of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed;

Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to have been infringed, or, if multiple copyrighted works at a single online site are covered by a single notification, a representative list of such works at that site;

Identification of the material that is claimed to be infringing or to be the subject of infringing activity and that is to be removed or access to which is to be disabled and information reasonably sufficient to permit EPES to locate the material;

Information reasonably sufficient to permit EPES to contact you, such as an address, telephone number and, if available, e-mail;

A statement that you have a good-faith belief that use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law; and

A statement that the information in the notification is accurate, and under penalty of perjury, that you are authorized to act on behalf of the owner of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed.

Only DMCA notices should go to the Copyright Agent; any other feedback, comments, or requests should be directed to Customer Service at 800-869-3737. You acknowledge that if you fail to comply with all of the requirements of this provision, your DMCA notice may be invalid.

Your physical or electronic signature;

Identification of the content that has been removed or to which access has been disabled and the location at which the content appeared before it was removed or disabled;

A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the content was removed or disabled as a result of mistake or a misidentification of the content; and

Your name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address, a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal court in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and a statement that you will accept service of process from the person who provided notification of the alleged infringement.

If a counter-notice is received by the Copyright Agent, you agree that EPES may forward a copy of the counter-notice to the original complaining party.

9. Disclaimer and Links to Third-Party Sites

The Sites may contain information provided to EPES by third parties. This information is provided on the Sites for your convenience only, and EPES makes no warranties or representations as to the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of such information.

The Sites also may contain links to other third-party websites, which may offer other services, software or resources. These links are provided for your convenience only. EPES has no responsibility for these third-party websites or the content contained therein. Such links do not constitute endorsements by or affiliations with EPES of such websites, their content or any products or services made available thereon. Such links do not constitute authorization to use any trademark, service mark, trade name, logo, trade dress or copyright of EPES. You agree and acknowledge that EPES is not responsible or liable for any content or related materials contained on any of these third-party websites. EPES cannot and does not make any representations or warranties in connection with such third-party websites or the content contained thereon.

You will not link or frame any portions of the Sites without the express written permission of EPES.

10. No Warranty

THE INFORMATION AND MATERIALS CONTAINED ON THESE SITES IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, EPES, ITS AFFILIATES, AND THEIR OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, AGENTS, REPRESENTATIVES, SUBCONTRACTORS AND SUPPLIERS HEREBY DISCLAIM (i) ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF NON-INFRINGEMENT, MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND ANY WARRANTIES THAT THE SITES' CONTENT, FUNCTIONS, OPERATION OR AVAILABILITY WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE, THAT DEFECTS WILL BE CORRECTED, OR THAT THE SITES OR THE SYSTEMS THAT MAKE THEM AVAILABLE WILL BE FREE OF VIRUSES OR OTHER HARMFUL COMPONENTS; (ii) ALL WARRANTIES AS TO THE ACCURACY, RELIABILITY OR COMPLETENESS OF THE INFORMATION CONTAINED ON THE SITES; AND (iii) ANY LIABILITY FOR ERRORS, INACCURACIES OR OMISSIONS IN THE INFORMATION CONTAINED ON THESE SITES, AND FOR ANY DOWNTIME EXPERIENCED ON THE WEBSITES.

11. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, EPES AND ITS AFFILIATES SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, DIRECT, PUNITIVE, INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL OR OTHER DAMAGES OF ANY KIND, UNDER ANY THEORY OF LIABILITY (WHETHER IN CONTRACT OR TORT, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, NEGLIGENCE OR OTHERWISE) ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE SITES, OR A DELAY OR INABILITY TO USE THE SITES, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION DAMAGES DUE TO LOST PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF DATA OR DAMAGE TO SYSTEMS, EVEN IF EPES HAS BEEN EXPRESSLY ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

12. Indemnification

You hereby agree to release and hold EPES, its affiliates, and their officers, directors, employees, agents and representatives harmless from and defend and indemnify them against any and all third-party claims, liability, damages and/or costs (including without limitation attorneys fees) they incur arising out of or related to (i) your use of the Sites, (ii) your violation of the Terms of Use, or (iii) your infringement of any intellectual property or other right.

13. Scheduled Downtime and Outages

EPES does not guarantee continuous, uninterrupted or secure access to the Sites, and operation of the Sites may be affected by factors outside of EPES’ control, for which EPES shall not be liable. EPES may from time to time in its sole discretion periodically schedule system downtime for system maintenance and other purposes.

14. Privacy

The EPES Privacy Policy, found here , applies to use of the Sites, and its terms are made part of these Terms of Use.

15. Invalidity of Terms

If any part of these Terms of Use is determined to be invalid or unenforceable pursuant to applicable law, then the invalid or unenforceable provision will be deemed superseded by a valid, enforceable provision that most clearly expresses the intent of the original provision and the remainder of these Terms of Use shall continue in effect.

The provisions of these Terms of Use that limit or waive any clearly established right or responsibility of a consumer under New Jersey law shall be void and unenforceable. All provisions contained herein are only enforceable to the extent permitted by law.

16. Termination or Suspension of Access

EPES may terminate or suspend your access to any or all of the Sites at any time, with or without cause.

17. Waiver

Any waiver of any provision of the Terms of Use will be effective only if in writing and signed by EPES.

18. Governing Law

The Terms of Use shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, without regard to conflict of law principles.

19. DISPUTE RESOLUTION

PLEASE READ THIS SECTION CAREFULLY—IT MAY SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECT YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS, INCLUDING THE RIGHT TO A JURY TRIAL. IT CONTAINS PROCEDURES FOR MANDATORY PRE-DISPUTE RESOLUTION, BINDING ARBITRATION, AND JURY TRIAL AND CLASS ACTION WAIVERS. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW IF YOU WISH TO OPT OUT OF THE PROVISIONS REQUIRING YOU TO RESOLVE DISPUTES THROUGH INDIVIDUAL ARBITRATION.

A. Disputes. The terms of this Section shall apply to all Disputes between you and EPES. For the purposes of this Section, “Dispute” shall mean any dispute, claim, or action between you and EPES arising under or relating to any Site, these Terms, or any other transaction involving you and EPES, whether in contract, warranty, misrepresentation, fraud, tort, intentional tort, statute, regulation, ordinance, or any other legal or equitable basis, and shall be interpreted to be given the broadest meaning allowable under law.

B. Binding Arbitration. You and EPES further agree: (i) to arbitrate all Disputes between the parties pursuant to the provisions in these Terms; (ii) these Terms memorialize a transaction in interstate commerce; (iii) the Federal Arbitration Act (9 U.S.C. §1, et seq.) governs the interpretation and enforcement of this Section; and (iv) this Section shall survive termination of these Terms. ARBITRATION MEANS THAT YOU WAIVE YOUR RIGHT TO A JUDGE OR JURY IN A COURT PROCEEDING AND YOUR GROUNDS FOR APPEAL ARE LIMITED. The arbitrator may award you the same damages as a court sitting in proper jurisdiction, as limited by the Limitation of Liability set forth in Section 11 of this Agreement, and may award declaratory or injunctive relief only in favor of the individual party seeking relief and only to the extent necessary to provide relief warranted by that party’s individual claim. In addition, in some instances, the costs of arbitration could exceed the costs of litigation and the right to discovery may be more limited in arbitration than in court. The decision of the arbitrator shall be final and enforceable by any court with jurisdiction over the parties.

C. Small Claims Court. Notwithstanding the foregoing, you may bring an individual action in the small claims court of your state or municipality if the action is within that court’s jurisdiction and is pending only in that court.

D. Dispute Notice. In the event of a Dispute, you or EPES must first send to the other party a notice of the Dispute that shall include a written statement that sets forth the name, address and contact information of the party giving it, the facts giving rise to the Dispute, and the relief requested (the “Dispute Notice”). The Dispute Notice to EPES must be addressed to: EPES, 2675 Morgantown Road, Reading, PA 19607, Attn.: Legal Department (the “EPES Notice Address”). The Dispute Notice to you will be sent by certified mail to the most recent address we have on file or otherwise in our records for you. If EPES and you do not reach an agreement to resolve the Dispute within sixty (60) days after the Dispute Notice is received, you or EPES may commence an arbitration proceeding pursuant to this Section. Following submission and receipt of the Dispute Notice, each of us agrees to act in good faith to seek to resolve the Dispute before commencing arbitration.

E. WAIVER OF CLASS ACTIONS AND CLASS ARBITRATIONS. YOU AND EPES AGREE THAT EACH PARTY MAY BRING DISPUTES AGAINST THE OTHER PARTY ONLY IN AN INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY, AND NOT AS A PLAINTIFF OR CLASS MEMBER IN ANY PURPORTED CLASS OR REPRESENTATIVE PROCEEDING, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION FEDERAL OR STATE CLASS ACTIONS, OR CLASS ARBITRATIONS. NEITHER YOU NOR EPES WILL SEEK TO HAVE ANY DISPUTE HEARD AS A CLASS ACTION, PRIVATE ATTORNEY GENERAL ACTION, OR IN ANY OTHER PROCEEDING IN WHICH EITHER PARTY ACTS OR PROPOSES TO ACT IN A REPRESENTATIVE CAPACITY. NO ARBITRATION OR OTHER PROCEEDING WILL BE COMBINED WITH ANOTHER WITHOUT THE PRIOR WRITTEN CONSENT OF ALL PARTIES TO ALL AFFECTED ARBITRATIONS OR PROCEEDINGS.

F. Arbitration Procedure. If a party elects to commence arbitration, the arbitration will be administered by the American Arbitration Association (“AAA”) and governed by the Consumer Arbitration Rules of the AAA (“AAA Rules”) in conjunction with the rules set forth in these Terms, except that AAA may not administer any multiple claimant or class arbitration, as the parties agree that the arbitration shall be limited to the resolution only of individual claims. The AAA Rules are at www.adr.org or by calling 1-800-778-7879. If there is a conflict between the AAA Rules and the rules set forth in these Terms, the rules set forth in these Terms shall govern. All Disputes shall be resolved by a single neutral arbitrator, and both parties shall have a reasonable opportunity to participate in the selection of the arbitrator. The arbitrator is bound by these Terms. The arbitrator, and not any federal, state, or local court or agency, shall have exclusive authority to resolve all disputes arising out of or relating to the interpretation, applicability, enforceability or formation of these Terms, including, but not limited to, any claim that all or any part of these Terms is void or voidable. The arbitrator shall also have exclusive authority to rule on his or her own jurisdiction, including any objections with respect to the existence, scope, or validity of the arbitration agreement or to the arbitrability of any claim or counterclaim. The arbitrator shall be empowered to grant whatever relief would be available in a court under law or in equity. The arbitrator’s award shall be binding on the parties and may be entered as a judgment in any court of competent jurisdiction. You may choose to engage in arbitration hearings by telephone. Arbitration hearings not conducted by telephone shall take place in a location reasonably accessible from your primary residence (or principal place of business if you are a small business), or in Berks County, Pennsylvania, at your option.

G. Initiation of Arbitration Proceeding. If either you or EPES decide to arbitrate a Dispute, we agree to the following procedure:

i. Write a Demand for Arbitration. The demand must include a description of the Dispute and the amount of damages sought to be recovered. You can find a copy of a Demand for Arbitration at www.adr.org (“Demand for Arbitration: Consumer Arbitration Rules”).

ii. Send one copy of the Demand for Arbitration to AAA by mail at American Arbitration Association Case Filing Services 1101 Laurel Oak Road, Suite 100 Voorhees, NJ 08043.

iii. Send one copy of the Demand for Arbitration to the other party at the same address as the Dispute Notice, or as otherwise agreed to by the parties.

H. Hearing Format. In all hearing formats, the arbitrator shall issue a written decision that explains the essential findings and conclusions on which an award, if any, is based. During the arbitration, the amount of any settlement offer made by EPES or you shall not be disclosed to the arbitrator until after the arbitrator determines the amount, if any, to which you or EPES is entitled.

I. Arbitration Fees and Payments. Payment of all filing, administration, and arbitrator fees will be governed by the applicable AAA rules. In addition, the provisions of Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 68 (cost-shifting) shall apply and be enforced by the arbitrator after entry of an award. You and EPES agree that the parties have a shared interest in reducing the costs and increasing the efficiencies associated with arbitration. Therefore, you or EPES may elect to engage with the AAA regarding arbitration fees, and you and EPES agree that the parties (and counsel, if represented) will work together in good faith to ensure that arbitration remains cost-effective for all parties.

J. Claims or Disputes Must be Filed Within One Year. To the extent permitted by law, any claim or dispute to which this Section applies must be filed within one year. The one-year period begins when the claim or Notice of Dispute first could be filed. If not filed within one year, the claim or dispute will be permanently barred.

K. 30-Day Opt-out Period. IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO BE BOUND BY THE ARBITRATION PROVISION IN THIS DISPUTES SECTION, YOU MUST NOTIFY EPES BY E-MAILING privacy@penske.com WITHIN 30 DAYS OF THE DATE THAT YOU ACCEPT THESE TERMS (UNLESS A LONGER PERIOD IS REQUIRED BY APPLICABLE LAW). In the e-mail, you must provide your (a) first name, (b) last name, (c) address, (d) phone number, and (e) account number(s) and state the following: “I wish to opt out of the arbitration provision contained in EPESs’ Terms of Use.” By providing your information in the method above, you are opting out of the agreement to arbitrate contained in EPES’ Terms of Use. Your opt-out request will only be valid if made within thirty (30) days of first accepting the Terms of Use. In the event that you opt-out consistent with the procedure set forth above, all other terms contained herein shall continue to apply, including those related to the applicable governing law and the court(s) in which legal disputes may be brought.

L. Severability. If any provision in this Section is found to be unenforceable, that provision shall be severed with the remainder of these Terms remaining in full force and effect. The foregoing shall not apply to the prohibition against class or representative actions; if the prohibition against class or representative actions is found to be unenforceable, this entire Section shall be null and void. The terms of this Section, including the arbitration provision, shall otherwise survive any termination of these Terms.

M. Exclusive Venue for Other Controversies. EPES and you agree that any controversy excluded from the dispute resolution procedure and class action waiver provisions in this Section (other than an individual action filed in small claims court) shall be filed only in the courts of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Berks County, or the United States District Court for Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and each party hereby irrevocably and unconditionally consents and submits to the exclusive jurisdiction of such courts for any such controversy. You also agree to waive the right to trial by jury in any such action or proceeding.

20. International Users

The Sites are controlled and operated by EPES in the United States of America. EPES makes no representations or warranties that the content of the Sites are appropriate or available for use in locations outside the United States of America, and access to the Sites in territories or countries where they are illegal is strictly prohibited. You may not use the Sites or export materials contained thereon in violation of U.S. export laws and regulations. If you access these Sites from outside the United States, you are responsible for compliance with all local laws.

21. Miscellaneous

EPES’ failure to strictly enforce the performance of any provision of these Terms of Use shall not be deemed a waiver of its rights under such provision. EPES may assign its rights and duties under these Terms of Use to any party at any time without notice to you.

22. Changes in The Sites and These Terms of Use

EPES has the right, at its sole discretion, to modify these Terms of Use and to change, suspend or discontinue all or any portion of the Sites at any time, without notice, with such changes effective upon posting on the Sites.

23. Questions, Comments, Complaints, or Service Issues

If you have any questions, comments, complaints or service issues pertaining to the Sites, please contact Customer Service at 800-869-3737 or via email.

### The Importance of Supply Chain Resiliency: Why It Matters More Than Ever

**Published:** November 20, 2025 | **Author:** Magdalene Hoffman | **Section:** News and Stories
**URL:** https://www.epestransport.com/about/news-and-stories/the-importance-of-supply-chain-resiliency/.md

It is more important than ever to understand supply chain resilience in the fast-paced world of today. Geopolitical unrest or natural disasters can cause supply chain interruptions that have a significant impact on enterprises, economies, and even average consumers. However, what precisely is supply chain resilience, and why should any firm place a high value on it?

Recognizing the Resilience of the Supply Chain

The ability of a supply chain to adjust to and recover from unforeseen interruptions is referred to as supply chain resilience. Natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes as well as man-made emergencies like cyberattacks or political turmoil may cause these disruptions. In order to preserve company continuity, a robust supply chain can resist these shocks, lessen their effects, and recover swiftly.

The Growing Importance of Resiliency

The business climate around the world is getting more and more unstable. Among the elements causing this volatility are:

Climate Change: Extreme weather events and natural disasters are becoming more frequent and severe. These events can disrupt transportation routes, damage infrastructure, and affect the availability of raw materials.

Geopolitical Instability: Political tensions, trade wars, and economic sanctions can lead to sudden changes in supply chain dynamics. Companies that rely heavily on specific regions or suppliers are particularly vulnerable to these shifts.

Cybersecurity Threats: As supply chains become more digitized, they also become more susceptible to cyberattacks. Ransomware, data breaches, and other cyber threats can disrupt operations and compromise sensitive information.

Pandemics and Health Crises: The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated how global health crises can disrupt supply chains on an unprecedented scale. Lockdowns, travel restrictions, and health-related concerns can severely impact production and distribution.

The Benefits of a Resilient Supply Chain

Investing in supply chain resiliency offers several key benefits:

Business Continuity: A resilient supply chain helps ensure that a business can continue operating despite disruptions. This continuity is vital for maintaining customer trust and avoiding revenue loss during crises.

Competitive Advantage: Companies with robust supply chain strategies can quickly adapt to changes and uncertainties, giving them a competitive edge. They can respond faster to market demands and adjust their operations to mitigate risks.

Cost Savings: While building resiliency requires investment, it can lead to cost savings in the long run. By reducing the impact of disruptions, companies can avoid costly emergency responses and production delays.

Enhanced Customer Satisfaction: Reliable supply chains ensure that products and services are delivered on time. This reliability fosters customer loyalty and strengthens the company's reputation.

Ways To Build Supply Chain Resiliency

Variation: One of the most effective ways to build resiliency is to diversify suppliers and sourcing locations. Relying on a single supplier or region can create vulnerabilities. By spreading risk across multiple sources, companies can mitigate the impact of disruptions.

Inventory Management: Maintaining strategic inventory levels can provide a buffer against supply chain disruptions. Safety stock and buffer inventories help ensure that businesses can continue operating even if there are delays in supply or unexpected spikes in demand.

Technology and Data Analytics: Leveraging technology, such as supply chain management software and data analytics, can provide real-time visibility into the supply chain. This visibility helps companies identify potential issues early and make informed decisions to address them.

Collaboration and Communication: Building strong relationships with suppliers and stakeholders fosters better communication and collaboration. In times of crisis, these relationships can facilitate quicker problem-solving and support.

Risk Assessment and Contingency Planning: Regularly assessing risks and developing contingency plans are crucial for resiliency. Companies should identify potential vulnerabilities in their supply chains and create action plans to address them.

Investing in Cybersecurity: As cyber threats become more prevalent, investing in robust cybersecurity measures is essential. This includes implementing strong data protection protocols, conducting regular security audits, and educating employees about cyber threats.

We are currently working in a time of constant uncertainty and rapid change. Supply chain resiliency is not just a strategic advantage but a necessity. By investing in diverse suppliers, advanced technology, and effective risk management, businesses can navigate disruptions more effectively and maintain their competitive edge. The importance of a resilient supply chain extends beyond individual companies; it impacts entire economies and global markets. As the world continues to evolve, building and maintaining a resilient supply chain will remain a crucial element of sustainable success.

### Choosing Between-LTL-and-FTL-Shipping

**Published:** November 20, 2025 | **Author:** Magdalene Hoffman | **Section:** News and Stories
**URL:** https://www.epestransport.com/about/news-and-stories/choosing-between-ltl-and-ftl-shipping/.md

In the world of supply chain management and logistics, economy and effectiveness are critical factors. Whether you run a major organization overseeing intricate distribution networks or a small firm delivering goods across the nation, choosing between Less Than Truckload (LTL) and Full Truckload (FTL) shipping can have a big influence on your bottom line. In this blog article, we'll examine each strategy and discuss its benefits and considerations.

Understanding LTL Shipping

LTL shipping entails moving smaller shipments that don't need to fill a whole trailer. Rather, several shipments from several clients are combined into a single truckload. Businesses that don't need the speed and exclusivity of a full truckload or those with smaller quantities of items to ship are better suited for this option.

Advantages of LTL Shipping:

Cost Savings: LTL shipping is typically more cost-effective for smaller shipments because you only pay for the space your shipment occupies rather than the entire truck.

Flexibility: It allows businesses to ship smaller quantities without having to wait to fill an entire truck, which can accelerate delivery times.

Reduced Environmental Impact: By consolidating shipments, LTL shipping can help reduce carbon emissions and minimize the ecological footprint of transportation.

Considerations for LTL Shipping:

Transit Time: Since LTL shipments involve multiple stops for consolidation and deconsolidation, transit times can be longer compared to FTL shipping.

Risk of Damage or Loss: With multiple handling points, there may be a higher risk of damage or loss compared to FTL shipments where goods are loaded and unloaded fewer times.

Exploring FTL Shipping

Full Truckload (FTL) shipping involves booking an entire truck to transport goods specifically for one customer. This method is appropriate for businesses that have large quantities of goods to ship or require faster transit times and increased security.

Advantages of FTL Shipping:

Faster Transit Times: Since the truck travels directly from the origin to the destination without stops for consolidation, FTL shipments usually have shorter transit times.

Reduced Handling: With fewer touchpoints, FTL shipments have a lower risk of damage or loss compared to LTL shipments.

Security and Exclusivity: Businesses have greater control and security over their shipments since the entire truck is dedicated to their goods.

Considerations for FTL Shipping:

Cost: FTL shipping can be more expensive, especially for smaller shipments, as you are paying for the entire truck regardless of how much space your goods occupy.

Efficiency: It requires careful planning and coordination to ensure that the truck is fully utilized to avoid empty space, which can impact cost-effectiveness.

Making the Right Choice for Your Business

When deciding between LTL and FTL shipping, several factors should be considered to determine the best option for your business:

Size and Volume of Shipment: If you have large quantities of goods to ship, FTL shipping may be more economical and efficient. Conversely, if your shipments are smaller or irregular in size, LTL shipping could provide cost savings.

Transit Time Requirements: Consider how quickly your shipments need to reach their destination. FTL shipping generally offers faster transit times, which may be critical for time-sensitive deliveries.

Cost Considerations: Evaluate your budget and the cost implications of each shipping method. While LTL shipping may be cheaper for smaller shipments, FTL shipping could offer better value for larger volumes.

Shipping Frequency: If you have regular shipments that can be consolidated with other orders, LTL shipping may be more suitable. For sporadic or urgent shipments, FTL shipping might be the better choice.

Product Characteristics: Assess the fragility and sensitivity of your goods. For delicate items that require minimal handling, FTL shipping might provide better protection.

Depending on the size of your item, the required transit time, your budget, and your logistical requirements, both LTL and FTL shipping have unique benefits. To make an informed selection that fits both your company's goals and your customers' expectations, it is essential to understand these distinctions. Simplifying business operations and improving customer happiness can be achieved by selecting the optimal shipping method, regardless of your priorities: speed, cost-effectiveness, or cargo security. In a competitive industry, you may maximize your logistics strategy and boost business growth by carefully considering the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative.

### Landing Gear Safety Tips

**Published:** November 20, 2025 | **Author:** Magdalene Hoffman | **Section:** News and Stories
**URL:** https://www.epestransport.com/about/news-and-stories/landing-gear-safety-tips/.md

Ensuring safety and efficiency when managing trailers is more than simply routine tasks; it requires close attention to detail and proper procedure to avoid potential hazards. Implementing proper techniques when picking up or dropping off a trailer will decrease wear and tear on the body and lower the chance of severe injury. From thoroughly checking equipment to implementing proper techniques, each step is critical to ensuring both personal well-being and operational efficiency.

Below are some tips to use when picking up or dropping off a trailer to help reduce wear and tear on the body and serious injury:

Properly inspect both the trailer and crank. If any noticeable issues or problems are seen, report this to the maintenance department as soon as possible. Also, document these issues in the Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR).

To help reduce injury, brace yourself against the trailer with the opposite hand you are using to crank the trailer. Having a good body posture while loading and unloading a trailer reduces wear and tear on your shoulders, back, wrist, and neck.

At all costs, try to avoid twisting your back when applying a force that can cause serious back injury.

Use the correct gear. There are two different gears - high and low. You can select these gears by moving the crankshaft in and out.

When coupling the trailer, it should be lower than the fifth wheel. When the trailer is lower, it is lifted a little and reduces some of the pressure of the loaded trailer.

To avoid face injury, keep your face safely away from the swing handle.

DO NOT speed up the crank, as it can cause injury to your shoulder. Have patience and move at a safe speed.

Use all your fingers when gripping the crank.

Including these recommendations into your routine for managing trailers increases overall efficiency and equipment lifespan in addition to improving safety. By putting careful crank operation, practical practices, and in-depth inspections first, you reduce possible hazards and help create a safer workplace.

### The Benefits of Full Truckload Shipping for Your Business

**Published:** November 20, 2025 | **Author:** Magdalene Hoffman | **Section:** News and Stories
**URL:** https://www.epestransport.com/about/news-and-stories/the-benefits-of-full-truckload-shipping-for-your-business/.md

Quicker Delivery Schedules

Delivering goods more quickly than Less Than Truckload (LTL) shipping is one of the main benefits of Full Truckload (FTL) shipping. Transit times are shortened for FTL shipments because there is just one delivery route and no need for multiple stops for various deliveries. Businesses who deal with perishable items, time-sensitive products, or seasonal inventory that needs to get to its destination quickly can especially benefit from this.

For instance, a manufacturer in a hurry to restock can depend on FTL to guarantee prompt delivery of their goods from the warehouse to the distribution center or retailer. By matching or surpassing delivery expectations, faster delivery times increase customer satisfaction while simultaneously increasing operational efficiency.

Reduced Risk of Damage

Shipping full truckloads considerably lowers the possibility that your goods will be damaged. Unlike LTL shipping, which combines several shipments from different companies into one vehicle, FTL shipping involves packing the entire truck with your shipment alone, resulting in less handling and less chance of damage.

Businesses exporting high-value or fragile commodities must take advantage of this reduced handling. By loading and unloading products at the origin and destination, freight-forwarding minimizes the possibility of mishandling, shifting, or damage occurring during transit. As a result, companies can save money on expenses related to defective products, returns, and unhappy customers.

Cost-Effective for Large Shipments

Even while FTL shipping first appears more costly, it may actually be more economical for companies that ship large volumes frequently. Compared to LTL delivery, the cost per product can drop dramatically when delivering in bulk. This is so because, as opposed to weight or volume of the package, FTL charges are determined by mileage and truck capacity.

Furthermore, FTL shipping does away with the necessity for reloading and intermediate stops, which can add to the expense of LTL transportation. Businesses can obtain greater economies of scale by maximizing truck capacity and cutting down on transit times, which makes FTL a cost-effective option for big shipments.

Enhanced Security and Control

Businesses can regulate their shipments more effectively when they use full truckload transportation. It is simpler to track and keep an eye on the cargo during the entire trip because the vehicle is only used for one shipment. Advanced tracking systems with real-time updates are provided by many FTL carriers, enabling businesses to monitor their shipments closely and react quickly to any potential problems.

An additional important advantage is increased security. Since the items are transported in the same vehicle from beginning to end, FTL shipments are less likely to be altered or stolen. Businesses that move sensitive or expensive goods, including electronics, prescription drugs, or private data, should pay special attention to this level of security.

Simplified Logistics

Organizing logistics can be challenging, particularly when handling several shipments via LTL shipping. This procedure is made simpler by FTL shipping, which handles events and minimizes the number of touchpoints. Businesses may avoid the hassle of organizing different pickups and deliveries, negotiating with multiple carriers, and keeping track of individual bills for every cargo by using FTL.

Streamlining logistics helps firms cut down on administrative work, minimize mistakes, and increase productivity. By making things simpler, companies are able to concentrate more on their core competencies and strategic expansion, as opposed to being sidetracked by administrative difficulties.

Flexibility and Customization

High levels of customization and flexibility are available with FTL delivery to accommodate unique business demands. Businesses can select the type of vehicle, unique handling needs, and delivery timetables that best fit their products and operations because the entire truck is devoted to a single shipment.

For example, companies exporting items that are sensitive to temperature can choose to use refrigerated trucks to provide the best possible conditions while in transit. Similar to this, companies who have urgent goods might give priority to quicker and direct delivery routes. This degree of personalization guarantees that companies can adjust their shipping plans to meet their particular needs and goals.

Environmental Benefits

Sustainability is becoming more crucial for companies in every sector. Because full truckload shipping requires fewer trips to deliver goods, it can support a business's sustainability initiatives. FTL shipments can make the best use of available space and lessen the amount of partially loaded trucks on the road because they fill a complete truck.

Through the optimization of load capacity and the reduction of shipping frequency, companies can mitigate their carbon footprint and promote more environmentally friendly transportation methods. This not only advances environmental objectives but also improves a business's standing as a socially conscious enterprise.

Better Inventory Management

Meeting client needs and preserving ideal stock levels depend on effective inventory management. FTL shipping offers quicker and more dependable delivery times, which benefits organizations by enhancing inventory management. Businesses may more effectively manage their inventory replenishments, lower stockouts, and minimize excess inventory with reliable and timely deliveries.

Higher customer satisfaction, lower storage costs, and improved cash flow are all directly related to improved inventory management. Companies can ensure they have the proper products on hand when needed while keeping reduced stockpiles.

Improve Your Business Today

Numerous advantages provided by FTL transportation can greatly improve your company's operations. For large shipments, FTL offers a cost-effective solution with improved security, shorter delivery times, and a lower risk of damage. It's a dependable and effective way to move goods. The benefits of FTL shipping also include enhanced inventory management, flexibility, reduced logistics costs, and environmental advantages.

By leveraging FTL shipping, businesses can streamline their supply chain, optimize costs, and deliver superior value to their customers. As you evaluate your shipping strategies, consider the numerous benefits of FTL and how it can support your business growth and success.

Having a familiar companion, such as a furry buddy, may reduce feelings of loneliness and boost spirits.

Introducing and developing programs that promote regular eating and exercise routines are very beneficial. Because mental and physical health are linked, these tools can provide drivers with the tools they need to maintain their physical, which will in turn improve their mental health as well.

A driver's attitude, concentration and general well-being can also significantly improve with a restful night's sleep. Therefore, encouraging healthy sleep habits and providing testing and solutions for common sleep problems, such as sleep apnea, is crucial.

A support system that encourages positive thinking is also important. Positive thinking may be sustained through practices such as stretching at rest areas, meditating before starting the engine, listening to audiobooks or podcasts, playing relaxing music and being mindful of stress triggers.

Its also essential that organizations create trust with drivers and offer easy accessible mental health solutions. In addition, having an open-door policy, encouraging regular check-ins and having company sponsored support groups may all assist drivers in feeling connected and supported.

Being cognizant on warning indicators of a mental health crisis for drivers plays a key role in a reliable support group. This may include things such as emotional outbursts, exhaustion and stepping back from social circles.

A comprehensive support system for regional truck drivers should encompass mental health programs, wellness initiatives and personal stress management. By successfully combining these strategies, companies can create a better environment for their drivers, which leads to higher job satisfaction, improved safety and better overall performance.

Driving a truck often gives drivers a sense of community. Because of their professions, many truck drivers develop relationships with one another. Even though you could drive your truck most of the time by yourself, you can develop close bonds with other people who have similar lives. However, even in the best of times, it's critical to have a driver support system in place.

Epes understands and cares for its drivers. They maintain core values that center around:

### 10 Tips for Maximizing Efficiency in Your Truckload Shipping Processes

**Published:** November 20, 2025 | **Author:** Magdalene Hoffman | **Section:** News and Stories
**URL:** https://www.epestransport.com/about/news-and-stories/10-tips-for-maximizing-efficiency-in-your-truckload-shipping-processes/.md

In the world of logistics, efficiency is the key to success, especially when it comes to truckload shipping. Maximizing efficiency in your truckload shipping processes not only saves time and resources but also enhances customer satisfaction. In this blog post, we'll explore ten valuable tips to help you streamline your truckload shipping operations and achieve peak efficiency.

Make Use of Advanced Route Planning Software

Route planning is a key component of effective truckload shipment. By using cutting-edge route planning software, delivery routes can be greatly optimized, saving money on fuel and time spent traveling. In order to propose the most time-efficient routes, these technologies consider real-time traffic data, weather, and other factors. This ensures timely delivery and minimizes fuel consumption.

Adopt Technology for Real-Time Tracking

To keep tabs on your vehicles' whereabouts, make an investment in a reliable real-time tracking system. With the help of this technology, you can keep track of every shipment's location and status, which gives you important information about any delays or problems that might arise. By enabling you to proactively resolve issues, real-time tracking improves overall productivity and customer happiness.

Put Load Optimization Techniques Into Practice

Efficiency depends on making the most of the space in your trucks. Use load optimization techniques to make sure that every shipment is carefully packed to reduce empty areas and increase the quantity of cargo moved. This reduces the number of trips, the cost of transportation, and the impact on the environment.

Give Regular Equipment Maintenance Top Priority

Truckload shipment efficiency is largely dependent on your vehicles' dependability. To avoid failures and make sure your trucks are performing at their best, routine maintenance inspections and timely repairs are crucial. Maintaining a well-maintained fleet helps you save money over time by extending the lifespan of your trucks and lowering the chance of delays.

Choose Multimodal Transportation Options

Think about including multimodal transportation in your logistics plan. Moving goods across several modes of transportation, such as trucks, trains, and ships, is known as intermodal transportation. This strategy can lower costs, shorten transit times, and give flexibility in adapting to the demands of a shifting market. By utilizing multimodal solutions, you can select the most practical means of transportation for each part of your trip.

Implement Just-in-Time (JIT) Inventory Control

JIT inventory management is a tactic that reduces the quantity of inventory kept on hand. Production and demand synchronization lowers storage costs and boosts cash flow. Applying JIT principles to truckload shipping helps simplify the supply chain, ensure that shipments are only sent out when necessary, and remove needless warehouse storage.

Create Trusting Bonds With Carriers

For effective truckload shipment, solid connections with dependable carriers are crucial. Work together with providers who have a track record of punctual delivery, open communication, and adaptability. Stronger negotiating conditions, priority service, and an easier shipping procedure might result from a good collaboration with carriers.

Invest in Employee Training and Development

Efficiency in truckload shipping is not solely dependent on technology; well-trained and knowledgeable employees play a crucial role. Invest in continuous training and development programs for your staff to keep them updated on the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices. Empowered employees are more likely to make informed decisions that contribute to the overall efficiency of your shipping processes.

Utilize Data Analytics for Continuous Improvement

Harness the power of data analytics to gain insights into your truckload shipping operations. Analyzing key performance indicators (KPIs) such as delivery times, fuel efficiency, and cost per mile can highlight areas for improvement. Continuous monitoring and analysis of data enable you to make informed decisions, optimize processes, and identify opportunities for increased efficiency.

Stay Informed About Industry Regulations

The logistics industry is subject to various regulations and compliance standards. Staying informed about these regulations is crucial to avoid penalties and disruptions in your truckload shipping processes. Regularly update your knowledge of industry regulations and ensure that your operations comply with the latest requirements, contributing to smoother and more efficient shipping processes.

Efficiency in truckload shipping is a comprehensive effort that requires a combination of technology, strategic planning, and a commitment to continuous improvement. By implementing the ten tips outlined in this blog post, you can streamline your truckload shipping processes, reduce costs, enhance customer satisfaction, and position your logistics operations for long-term success in an ever-evolving industry.

**URL:** https://www.epestransport.com/about/news-and-stories/fight-fatigue-with-nutrition-exercise-and-rest/.md

To adequately fight fatigue, you need the proper amount of healthy foods, sleep and exercise. In this article, we are going to discuss keys to healthy snacking, stretching and identifying sleep disorders.

Healthy snacking gives your body the right fuel. Below are a few recommendations to help this happen:

Whole-grain snacks like simple popcorn or nuts and seeds are some of the finest foods to combat weariness.

Avoid processed meals like chips and candies.

Almonds, cashews, pecans, sunflower seeds, and walnuts are inexpensive grab-and-go snacks that are high in potassium, fiber, vitamins, and carbs to give you a large energy boost.

Don't forget to consume vegetables. Carrots and celery sticks are filled with antioxidants and vitamins.

Drink caffeine in moderation but avoid energy drinks and soda when possible. Instead try black coffee or unsweetened tea.

Identifying Sleep Disorders

If you can't get a rest night sleep, it's possible you're suffering from a sleep disorder. And while it's normal to experience sleep problems from time to time, the following signs may be part of a larger issue:

You commonly have difficulty sleeping.

You are typically tired throughout the day - even after getting seven hours of sleep the night before.

You have a reduced or impaired ability to perform.

The are four common types of sleep disorders:

Insomnia

Sleep apnea

Restless leg syndrome

Narcolepsy

Fortunately, many sleep apnea tests can be completed in the home and most are covered by insurance plans.

Improve Flexibility

Your muscles and joints may tighten up if you spend a lot of time in a fixed position, such as driving or sitting, during the day. The stretches listed below are common and can help with these issues:

Neck stretch - Bring your ear to your shoulder and hold for 10 seconds and then switch sides.

Lower back stretch - From a standing position, reach down and try to touch your toes, let your arms hang for 10 seconds. Roll up one vertebra at a time.

Quad/hip flexor stretch - Grab the front of your ankle to pull your leg back. Stand tall and hold for 30 seconds and then switch sides.

If you pay attention to the techniques and suggestions listed above, you can win the battle against fatigue. For more information about the benefits of working at Epes, click here.

### Keys to Healthy Living on the Road

**Published:** November 19, 2025 | **Author:** Magdalene Hoffman | **Section:** News and Stories
**URL:** https://www.epestransport.com/about/news-and-stories/keys-to-healthy-living-on-the-road/.md

Being a trucker comes with its own set of challenges, and one of the biggest hurdles is maintaining a healthy lifestyle while on the road. The long hours spent sitting behind the wheel, limited access to nutritious food options, and the constant stress can take a toll on a trucker's health. However, with some careful planning and conscious choices, it is possible to overcome these challenges and prioritize your well-being.

The Value of Exercise

Exercise is essential for general wellbeing in addition to maintaining a healthy weight. Regular exercise is crucial for truckers, as they spend a majority of their time sitting down. Exercise promotes happiness, lowers stress, increases energy, and helps with cardiovascular health. Additionally, it can prevent joint and muscular soreness that frequently follows extended periods of sitting.

Exercise Schedules

When you're on the road, it might be challenging to find the time and place for exercise. However, short spurts of physical exercise spread throughout the day can have a big impact. Start with easy workouts that you can perform in the cramped confines of your truck cabin, such lunges, squats, and stretching. Use rest stops to your advantage by jogging or walking quickly. Purchasing portable workout equipment, such as dumbbells or resistance bands, can also increase the number of possibilities for strength training activities. At least five days a week, try to get in at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity, such as brisk walking or cycling.

Advantages of Regular Exercise

Frequent exercise has several advantages for truck drivers. Primarily, it enhances cardiovascular health by fortifying the heart and augmenting blood circulation. By doing this, the risk of heart disease and other linked disorders is decreased. Second, physical activity releases endorphins, which are organic mood enhancers. This has the potential to reduce stress and enhance mental health. Physical activity also helps truckers stay awake and engaged on the road by boosting energy and preventing weariness. Finally, because truckers often lead sedentary lifestyles, frequent exercise lowers the risk of obesity and helps maintain a healthy weight.

Nutrition Choices

It's challenging to keep a healthy diet when traveling because there aren't many food alternatives and fast food is always tempting. However, truckers' general health and wellbeing depend on their ability to make thoughtful dietary decisions. First, load up your truck with nutritious food like granola bars, apples, and almonds. These are easy choices for on-the-go meals and include vital nutrients. When dining out, try to avoid fried items and instead choose baked or grilled choices. When planning your meals, choose lean foods like fish or chicken and provide lots of veggies. Limit the amount of sugar-filled beverages you consume and stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day.

Strategies for Managing Stress

Truckers often face high levels of stress due to long hours, traffic, and tight deadlines. However, managing stress is crucial for both physical and mental health. One effective strategy is to incorporate stress-reducing activities into your daily routine. This can include deep breathing exercises, practicing mindfulness or meditation, listening to calming music, or engaging in a hobby you enjoy during breaks. Taking short breaks to stretch or walk around can also help alleviate stress. It's important to prioritize self-care and find healthy outlets to unwind and relax.

Impact of Sleep

For the safety and general wellbeing of truck drivers, getting enough sleep is essential. Lack of sleep can cause weariness, impaired cognitive ability, and a higher chance of mishaps. Setting up a sleep schedule is essential to ensuring that you receive adequate restorative sleep. Attempt to stick to a regular sleep routine, even on the weekends. Invest in a comfy mattress or mattress topper, block out light, and make noise reductions to create a sleep-friendly atmosphere in your vehicle. Limit screen time before bed because it might mess with your sleep habits. Steer clear of coffee and big meals close to bedtime.

Tips for Getting Quality Sleep

It is feasible to get a good night's sleep when traveling with a few modifications. To reduce disruptions, park in a secure and peaceful location. Wear earplugs or utilize white noise machines to mask any noise, and use blackout curtains or eye masks to block out light. To guarantee comfort, get high-quality bedding and pillows. Create a pre-sleep routine that involves activities that promote relaxation, such as reading a book or deep breathing. Lastly, resist the urge to forgo sleep in favor of other activities or a late night. Make getting enough sleep a top priority.

By prioritizing exercise, making conscious nutrition choices, managing stress, and getting quality sleep, truckers can take control of their health and well-being. It's essential to plan ahead, make small changes, and establish healthy routines. Remember, your health is your most valuable asset, and taking care of it will not only benefit you but also ensure you can continue to drive towards success on the road.

### 10 Safety Concerns for Long-Haul Truckers

**Published:** November 19, 2025 | **Author:** Magdalene Hoffman | **Section:** News and Stories
**URL:** https://www.epestransport.com/about/news-and-stories/10-safety-concerns-for-long-haul-truckers/.md

The long-haul trucking industry is demanding and profitable, but it also has its share of difficulties and dangers. Long haul truckers should always put safety first because they spend a lot of time on the road and travel great distances. We'll go over some of the best safety advice for long-haul truckers in this blog article to help ensure a successful and safe trip.

Continual Vehicle Maintenance: For long-haul truckers to be safe, proper vehicle maintenance is essential. Check that your truck is in excellent working order before you start driving. Examine the fluid levels, brakes, lights, and tires. Plan routine maintenance to avoid unforeseen failures that might endanger your safety and schedule.

Get Enough Sleep: One of the main factors contributing to crashes in the transportation sector is fatigue. Before beginning a lengthy journey, make certain sure you get adequate sleep. Observe the Hours of Service (HOS) rules, which specify how long you can drive and when you should take a break. For alertness and attention when driving, getting enough sleep is crucial. You should always pull over to a safe place if you feel sick or fatigued.

Plan Your Route: By pre-planning your route, you may steer clear of unforeseen obstructions, traffic congestion, and dangerous roadways. Use GPS navigation systems made specifically for trucks to find low bridges, weight restrictions, and other important information. Always have a backup strategy in place in case your main route runs into unforeseen difficulties.

Weather Awareness: Long-haul truckers frequently endure adverse weather, from heavy rain and snow to scorching heat. Keep up with the local weather forecast for your journey and be ready. When road conditions are poor, reduce your speed and increase your following distance from other cars.

Maintain a Safe Following Distance: In order to prevent rear-end crashes, it's imperative to have a safe following distance. Maintain a distance of at least 4 seconds between your truck and the car in front of you. Increase this distance in bad weather to allow for longer stopping distances.

Use Seat Belts: Make sure all of your passengers use seat belts while you are driving. Seat belts are a cheap yet powerful safety precaution that can save lives in collisions.

Drink Plenty of Water and Eat Well: Avoiding heavy meals and staying hydrated are crucial for maintaining mental clarity and general health on lengthy journeys. Stock your vehicle with wholesome food (fruits, nuts, high-protein snacks), stay away from excessive caffeine consumption, which can cause energy collapses.

Avoid Distractions: Driving when distracted is risky. Put your phone aside, refrain from eating or grooming while you are driving, and pay attention to the road. Pull over to a secure area if you need to make a call or send a message.

Secure Your Cargo: It's important to properly secure your goods for both safety and legal compliance. Use the proper tools, such as chains and straps, to stop shifting or falling goods that might cause mishaps. Prepare for emergencies by keeping a kit on you that includes basics like blankets, flashlights, flares, and first aid materials. In isolated locations, having these supplies on hand may make a big difference in the event of breakdowns or crash.

### 5 Tips To Boost Efficiency Within Your Truckload Shipping Processes

**Published:** November 19, 2025 | **Author:** Magdalene Hoffman | **Section:** News and Stories
**URL:** https://www.epestransport.com/about/news-and-stories/5-tips-to-boost-efficiency-within-your-truckload-shipping-processes/.md

Effective truckload shipping procedures may be the difference between a successful supply chain and one that is slowed down by mistakes, delays, and extra expenses in today's fast-paced environment. Whether you're a seasoned logistics expert or a business owner in charge of managing shipping operations, it's critical to have measures in place to improve your truckload shipping procedures. Here are five practical suggestions to increase productivity and improve your shipping operations:

Use Cutting-Edge Software and Technology

Adding technology to your truckload shipping procedures may greatly increase productivity. Implement real-time tracking, automated route planning, and load optimization transportation management systems (TMS). You may also decrease commute times, save fuel usage, and make educated judgments with the aid of these solutions.

Use Data To Drive Decisions

Data reigns supreme in the realm of truckload freight. Analyze past shipment data to see trends, bottlenecks, and potential improvement areas. With this information, you may enhance route planning, improve demand projections, and modify delivery timetables. Your ability to make well-informed decisions that simplify procedures and cut wasteful spending will eventually increase operational efficiency through data-driven insights.

Implement Efficient Load Consolidation

Efficient load consolidation entails gathering a number of shipments with similar routes and destinations into a single truckload. This eliminates trailer empty space while simultaneously reducing the number of trucks on the road.

You may also save shipping expenses and reduce your carbon impact by increasing the capacity of each shipment. Work closely with your partners and suppliers to coordinate shipments and obtain the best load consolidation.

Concentrate on Effective Communication

Effective truckload shipping depends on frequent and clear communication among all parties. To prevent miscommunications, delays, and interruptions, keep lines of communication open with your suppliers, carriers, and clients. You may proactively handle any possible concerns and keep everyone updated on shipment progress and delivery schedules by providing timely and accurate information. Adopting digital communication tools can also improve information flow and lessen the possibility of human mistake.

Invest in Employee Training and Development

A competent and trained team is the basis of any efficient shipping operation. Keep your personnel informed of industry developments, legislative changes, and best practices by providing frequent training. Employees who have received proper training are more likely to see chances for optimization, avoid costly errors, and make sure that business operations go without a hitch. Encourage your company to have a culture of innovation and constant development.

Ultimately, a trained staff, strategic planning, data-driven decision-making, technology integration, and efficient communication are all necessary to optimize the effectiveness of your truckload shipping procedures. You can develop a simplified shipping operation that lowers costs, improves customer happiness, and supports a greener, more sustainable supply chain by putting these five suggestions into practice.

Always keep in mind that continual monitoring and change are the keys to success. Assess the success of your adopted strategy on a regular basis and be willing to make adjustments depending on shifting market dynamics and new technological developments. Efficiency can help you manage the difficulties of contemporary logistics, advance your business, and establish your organization as a leader in the field of truckload transportation.

### Protect Yourself From Sun Damage

**Published:** November 18, 2025 | **Author:** Magdalene Hoffman | **Section:** News and Stories
**URL:** https://www.epestransport.com/about/news-and-stories/protect-yourself-from-sun-damage/.md

A well-known research published in the New England Journal of Medicine several years ago described a Chicago truck driver who had been driving a delivery truck for 28 years. The 69-year-old man appeared with a 25-year history of skin thickening and wrinkling on his left side of the face. The UVA rays transmitted through the truck's window glass had entered the epidermis and top layers of dermis, causing acute photo-aging, according to the doctors.

Truck drivers face constant sun exposure, often without even realizing it. If you want to increase your sun protection in the coming days, weeks, or months, it's a good idea to follow these six tips - not only to minimize your chances of getting a sunburn, but also to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer.

Make Sunscreen Part of Your Daily Routine

According to Drive My Way, the first and most obvious thing you need to do when trying to lower your sun exposure risk is to invest in a powerful sunscreen and make sure you always have plenty on hand so you don't run out. You may come across a variety of sunscreen creams, but experts believe SPF ratings beyond 50 are unneeded; anything between 30 and 50 SPF will protect you from sunburn and block off approximately 98% of UV radiation.

If you want to get the most out of your sunscreen, you should apply it consistently and in the recommended amounts. That means applying enough to cover every square inch of exposed flesh. Furthermore, it is normally recommended that you apply it around 30 minutes before going outside and then reapply after a few hours of sun exposure.

Be Aware of the Sun's Direction

According to skincancer.net, truckers face a somewhat unusual danger of sun damage to the skin because their left sides are likely to absorb significantly more of the sun's rays. This is because it is the side of their bodies that faces the driver's side window. As a result, truckers may want to be more diligent about adding extra layers of protection to that side in particular.

Add an Extra Layer of Protection

Your truck's windows may already have some UV protection built in, but installing the type of UV film that is commonly available minimizes the danger even more, according to SkinCancer.net. This type of product is usually inexpensive and can considerably lower your risk.

Don't Rely on Sunscreen Only

According to Trucker to Trucker, you should cover all regions of your skin that will be exposed to the sun, but you don't have to rely only on sunscreen. Wearing long sleeves, a hat, driving gloves, and other protective clothing might also be beneficial.

Protect Your Eyes

Finally, sunglasses will help lower the risk of sun damage to your eyes and the areas surrounding them, in addition to minimizing glare when driving, according to Trucker to Trucker. However, not all sunglasses are created equal in terms of UV protection, so do your research before you invest your money.

### The Benefits of Being a Truck Driver

**Published:** November 18, 2025 | **Author:** Magdalene Hoffman | **Section:** News and Stories
**URL:** https://www.epestransport.com/about/news-and-stories/the-benefits-of-being-a-truck-driver/.md

The benefits package for truck drivers is one additional reason to get behind the wheel as a truck driver. The benefits package for truck drivers provides you with retirement security and a wide range of perks, including health care and paid time off (in addition to the freedom of the open road). You are free to explore the country, while you are financially independent.

There are a number of benefits to becoming a truck driver that are typically accessible early in your career. You might receive key benefits such as life, dental, vision, and medical insurance. Some companies provide paid time off, paid holidays, and vacation time, as well as retirement programs and referral bonuses. These benefits may differ depending on your position or company.

Nationwide, truck drivers make an average salary of about $65,000 per year. Numerous variables, such as the size of the business, the location of employment, and the driver's degree of experience, have an impact on this number. Due to the high demand for truck drivers, the industry has developed into a reliable form of income. Drivers may receive pay for selecting paths that other truck drivers might avoid.

Another notable perk of being a truck driver is that you get paid and get to travel to more locations than you would in many other jobs. Additionally, even though your work may require you to travel across the country, you can use your free time to visit attractions and landmarks. Travel is a huge perk of being a truck driver if you want to explore more of the US.

Where Can Your Truck Driving Career Take You?

Trucking typically requires self-supervision because you work alone a lot of the time. Your employer will likely specify the locations and the timing of your delivery, but you are solely responsible for all other tasks. Frequently, you could choose things like your job schedule, the truck you drive and your route.

If you enjoy driving trucks for a living, you might frequently seek additional training to increase your salary or open up new career opportunities. For instance, you might enter management or pursue certification to instruct at a school for truck drivers. If you're interested in starting your own business, you could become an owner-operator of a transportation company.

Since they frequently choose their own schedules, truck drivers are able to manage both their professional and personal lives. You might decide, for instance, to work solely during the week so that you can spend the weekends with friends or family. Having a flexible schedule also allows you to choose whether you want to work during the day or night. Overall, there are various opportunities to work outside of the typical five-day, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule in the trucking industry.

It takes about eight weeks to finish your Commercial Driver's License (CDL) requirements before you can start truck driving training. You may get paid by some transportation businesses to take the CDL test. Furthermore, certain trucking businesses could pay for all or part of your driving school fees. This may lower the price of enrolling in driving school and obtaining your license. You may often begin working a few weeks after receiving your CDL, allowing you to begin saving money without concern for debt.

The miles you drive as a truck driver are largely your choice. You might decide to take shorter routes if you want to get home every night. On the other hand, you could choose longer, slower routes that might take a few days or more to accomplish. The number and distance of routes you take depends on how many total hours you want to work. For instance, if you operate short, one-day journeys, you might be required to operate a number of routes each week.

Truck Drivers Play a Key Role

The fact that truck driving helps others makes it a worthwhile career. Because trucks transport needs like food and clothing to many sites, including grocery shops, petrol stations, malls, and hospitals, truck drivers play a crucial part in society. By ensuring that they get the items they want and need, truck drivers improve the lives of many individuals.

You get to be alone much of the time while on the road as a truck driver. As a result, you can have a lot of free time to study something new or enjoy music. For instance, you may listen to educational materials or an audiobook to master a new skill while driving.

It gives you a sense of community to drive a truck. Because of their professions, many truck drivers develop relationships with one another. Even though you could drive your truck most of the time by yourself, you can develop close bonds with other people who have similar lives.

### Melissa Nishan Named Recruiting Professional of the Year

**Published:** November 18, 2025 | **Author:** Magdalene Hoffman | **Section:** News and Stories
**URL:** https://www.epestransport.com/about/news-and-stories/melissa-nishan-named-recruiting-professional-of-the-year/.md

Congratulations to Melissa Nishan, VP of Driver Recruiting at EPES Transport System, who received the Transport Topics Recruiting Professional of the Year Award during the 20th Annual Recruitment and Retention Conference, held in Nashville, TN. The honor recognizes trucking industry recruiting professionals who have gone above and beyond in attracting drivers.

The nominees for the Transport Topics Recruiting Professional of the Year Award shared their wisdom during the opening of our last general session. Nishan discussed tactics and innovation she used in 2022 to reach hiring and retention targets.

"We didn't use just one tactic. It involved collaborating with the leadership team, increasing our pay early on, adjusting recruiter incentives, enhancing driver referral and rehire programs, creating new marketing campaigns, adding a pet policy and changing our benefits eligibility start date from 90 days to 30 days."

The way in which Epes has gone about recruiting has changed over the last few years, but the recruiting landscape has changed as well. "The past few years have changed the recruiting dynamic tremendously," stated Nishan. "Recruiters want the option of working remote and are in high demand. Drivers are looking for even more of a work life balance and driver pay has seen a huge increase over the previous two to three years."

In 2022, which was widely considered a very challenging year throughout the industry, Epes was able to hire nearly 1000 drivers, which resulted in a 10% increase in driver count. The company also enhanced and grew their training program and reduced their CPH metric, which is a metric designed to measure the costs associated with the sourcing, recruiting and staffing activities by an employer to fill an open position in the organization, by 20%.

Nishan attributes the overall driver recruiting success to a couple of critical factors: company culture and leadership. "The culture is very important in recruiting and retaining drivers. We do our best to instill a family atmosphere. We also communicate often and work hard to make the job a good balance of work/life. In addition, we promote health initiatives and because of our culture, we have a good reputation with drivers. We also try our very best to keep everyone happy."

Having been with the company for over 23 years, Nishan has seen many changes throughout the years. So how does she see recruiting and retention targets evolving over the next 3-5 years? "I believe that we will continue to enhance the positions to attract a younger generation. Pay will continue to evolve into a salary against a mileage-based pay. The Internet will remain the primary source of branding and recruiting."

Congratulations on a well-deserved award!

Epes is partnering with TAT to assist in their efforts in reuniting trafficking victims with their families and removing perpetrators from the streets. There are over 50 million victims of human trafficking globally, and disproportionately the majority of those victims are women and young girls. Truckers are in a unique position as the eyes and ears of the road to save countless victims of human trafficking due to their numbers, travels, and the nature of their jobs. Activities and behaviors that could indicate sex trafficking include:

A van/SUV with one male and a number of (young) females

A young girl walking into the shower area with a male

Young girls walking from truck to truck

Truck drivers flashing their lights to signal as a buyer for sex

Fortunately, with TAT's reach and tremendous partners, they have trained over 1,457,576 people with their training thus far. From the last 5 years, over 41 percent of the cases truckers have reported involved victims that are minors. Manufacturers, distributors, transportation companies, 3PLs, suppliers both upstream and downstream, freight brokers, freight forwarders, regulators, and even the customers themselves may fall under this category.

The idea of supply chain transparency ensures that everyone working inside a logistics network does so in a seamless, effective, hands-off manner and with shared knowledge. Particularly in companies that deal with consumers, transparency has grown in importance, and the development of trends like blockchain is unmistakable proof of this.
