Winter’s arrival always coincides with the Holiday Season, so most people actually look forward to this time of year...until after New Year’s Day. It is then when we get the slow realization that we will have at least two months of cold, wet, and windy days. As a professional driver you have no choice but to go out every day and do your best to come home unscathed.
Here are a few tips to help you accomplish this goal.
- Keep your windows clean, make sure your window wipers are in good condition, and utilize your defroster to clear windshields in the morning and keep them clear all day long.
- Be aware that driving in sub-freezing conditions can lead to issues such as ice building up on the brake systems, ice to build-up on the steps and equipment handhold.
- Carry a few extra non-perishable food items, plenty of water and some extra blankets. If conditions require you to stop where no services are available you will be glad you did this.
- Any moisture on the road can freeze as soon as the temperature drops below freezing. This ice will almost look like a light film of moisture on the road. When in reality it is some of the most treacherous of conditions.
Pro-tip – when you see road spray the road is wet not frozen.
- Slow down and give yourself even more following distance than usual.
- Start gradually and stop smoothly.
Probably the most important winter weather tip is to remember that you are the captain of your ship. If conditions become so bad that you cannot safely continue, then find a safe place to wait for conditions to improve.
